OUR GARDEN

Our Garden

Our garden and outdoor play is an essential part of all our children’s daily routine. At Westfield Nursery we have extensive outdoor areas including separate areas for babies, toddlers, pre-school children and a forest school area. Within the areas there are lots of exciting activities for all the children to explore and enjoy from making mud pies in the mud kitchen to learning the green cross code on our mini road. Our sensory area contains many attractive elements including a mini-beast hotel, water features, stepping stones, tunnels, music and stage area and balancing beams. On our grassed area we have a swing and slide set, willow walkway and playhouse for many hours of fun and enjoyment.

It is essential to children’s physiological development and spiritual well-being that they all spend time outdoors everyday. It is therefore important to organise our setting so that the children can play out all year round.

At Westfield Nursery, we firmly believe that “there’s no such thing as bad weather…. Just bad clothes”. As long as the children are dressed appropriately for the weather conditions, they can spend some of the day outside, regardless of the weather.

If children come to nursery without adequate clothing, we will use our stock of spare clothing so that this is not a barrier to outdoor play.

Children need regular access to outdoor play in order to develop their large and small muscles, experience an environment that is different to the inside of the nursery and access sunlight in order to absorb vitamin D more efficiently.

Outdoor areas, both within the nursery grounds and the local community have a wealth of resources which help children develop skills for now and the future. It helps to gain independence and develop investigative skills. Outdoor play supports risk taking and boosts self esteem.

The nursery ensures that all areas are safe and secure through close supervision and the use of robust risk assessments and safety checks.
